Festive Fun or HR Nightmare?

So, here we are in December and this is when we usually hear the tales of Christmas Parties gone wrong, Employers’ Liability claims, and Vicarious Liability.

Well, whilst that is important and something that is often brought to light by the inevitable Festive Parties, Work Drinks and Night’s Out at this time of year, we thought we would leave some Top Tips for employers and HR for the festive period.

Be Mindful of Celebrations

Not all of your workforce will celebrate Christmas, they may celebrate other religious days or may not celebrate at all.
Be mindful of these differences and ensure that everyone is included in any celebrations or festivities that are arranged.

We Are All Individuals

Needless to say, we all enjoy different things and have our own preferences – the world would be very boring if we were all the same!
However, whilst finding something that will be enjoyed by absolutely everybody may seem an impossible task…you should ensure that everyone is catered for in terms of dietary requirements and in terms of accessibility.

Give Clear Guidance

If you do organise an office party or get together, then ensure that clear guidance is issued to all attendees prior to the event in relation to their behaviour and conduct.
This may also include information as to travel arrangements and a little reminder that driving whilst under the influence of alcohol is not acceptable (good advice whether at a company party or otherwise!).

Reminding your staff to act responsibly when out and about is a good way of avoiding picking up a liability claim.

Time Off

December can be a month full of unplanned absences, whether that be due to illness, school holidays, festive parties, the list goes on…
However, you should ensure that your Employment Contracts and Staff Handbooks are clear as to the procedure that must be followed for absences and how this is managed.
If you do plan on closing the office (or business) for a period over Christmas, and therefore require staff to take time off, then ensure that your Contract allows you to do so and it is clear what implications this has on holiday entitlement.

HAVE FUN!

You and your staff have worked hard all year and so December should be a time to celebrate all of that hard work and your achievements, ready to start 2022 on the right foot to make a bigger and better year!
