We all know that wet or icy weather can significantly affect our driving experience, but many often forget that driving in the heat can incur additional dangers too! Follow our tips below on how to avoid unnecessary accidents or near-misses on the road in the sun this year.

Keep your vehicle’s fluids topped up!

Keeping all of the important fluids in your vehicle topped up is a crucial way of circumventing trouble on the road. Vehicle fluids such as motor oil, coolant, screen wash,  transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and more, should always be filled to a suitable level but it is especially important to do so in the heat. If you aren’t sure how to carry out these checks, you can refer to this guide by the RAC that includes other essential maintenance check instructions.

Make sure your air conditioning system is well maintained.

If your vehicle’s air conditioning has stopped working, or isn’t working as well as it used to, make sure to get it repaired by an experienced mechanic. Although it might not seem like a necessity, if you become overwhelmed by the heat whilst driving this could seriously effect your ability to drive safely. Look after your vehicle, and your vehicle will look after you!

Be prepared for the worst.

It is easy to assume that you will ‘probably be fine’, but in the event of a break down it is better to be safe than sorry! Keep some emergency essentials in your car such as: water, snacks, a blanket, a First Aid Kit, a torch, and cables for jump-starting your car if necessary! If there is anything else that you may personally require in addition to these basics, don’t hesitate to keep spares on you in case of emergency.

Check your tires are kept in good condition.

Depending on the type of tires you have, they could actually perish quicker in extreme heat. If you’re planning on committing to a long drive this Spring or Summer and your tires have already lost condition already; it’s worth getting them replaced beforehand. A tire popping or shredding on the road can produce a scary experience and easily cause dangerous driving.

In conclusion: Road safety matters, no matter the weather!

Get out there and enjoy yourself whilst the sun is shining, but make sure your vehicle is prepared for the hot weather – otherwise you may find your fun cut short!
